“Who can compare with me?” said Death, “for I am paler still.”
“You are very beautiful,” sighed the Clown, turning his powdered face from the mirror.”

did not enjoy as much as i hoped i would and i have to admit bar the time travel one i didn’t read them once they dropped the king in yellow through-line. i liked the teeny tiny short stories, the yellow sign, and the demoiselle d’ys the most!!

I really enjoyed the eerie, gothic first few stories so that's what my 4 stars are mostly for, but I can not for the life of me figure out why the last four stories where included. Not that they were bad per se, I think I would have appreciated them more if I had approached this book expecting loosely connected tales of some bohemian artists' love lives in Paris, but I hadn't so I found myself mostly confused & disappointed by them. Again though I did quite like the early stories, with the first, "The Repairer of Reputations", being the one I would say was the best.

The first five stories completely enraptured me (yes, even and especially The Demoiselle D'Ys). I sadly must award it four stars for the mediocre stories after the first five. But I cannot convey how affected I am by the sheer magic of the cosmic horror within. Not even Lovecraft affected me this much.

Have you seen the yellow sign?
