The writing is beautiful, but I also found it distant and that made it hard to connect to the characters and the things they experienced.

Beautiful generational story of a family and their hardships. Took me about half the book to get into it but I am admittedly in a bit of a reading slump. Would’ve preferred to read the physical copy of this book if I had time.

Looooved the first half. It stayed exciting and interesting until the focus shifted to Renshu. I can appreciate why the focus shifted, but it slowed the pace dramatically.

I have been reading a lot of sweeping generational family stories lately and this one is no exception but it is beautiful. Enjoyed the delicate but honest way it dealt with finding an identity growing up mixed race
