This was an insightful and heartbreaking story. This book talks about a family in China and all their struggles during the Japanese invasion, World War 2, China Civil war, Communism and so much more. This book goes through three different generations of this family in all their different phases of this history. The story got confusing as it talked about the political climate following World War 2 with the different names, but overall, the book was enjoyable. This gives you a good look into what might be going on in Ukraine with what it feels like being attacked by a neighboring country and having to move your family to keep them safe. This book was almost a 4 star, but it was kind of slow and hard to read in large chunks. The overall story is great and interesting read.

An absolute masterpiece. I cried tears of joy and heartache. The exploration of trauma as a through line for a familial/historical epic has new life breathed into it over and over by Fu’s incredibly powerful and touching stories. As lovely and sweet as it is harrowing and painful. Seriously, prepare to cry.

I was feeling burned out on generational stories, and was putting off reading this story. However, I really enjoyed this book, and am happy I picked it up. Very well written, especially for a debut novel, and would recommend to anyone interested in historical fiction focused on Chinese history and experiences in the 20th century
