I cried at the end of this but I think that’s most because I was 8 hours into a 14.5 hour drive.

Nice creepy story for youth!

I know this is a kid's book and I'm probably biased because I read it when I was younger, but it's so good. It's eerie and adult despite the intended audience and there are so many cool images and abstract ideas. Highly recommend.

This book was interesting, that’s for sure! I really liked it. It had such a distinct vibe to it, that I can’t quite name, but I liked. It was the kind of story that lives in between the margins of disturbing and peculiar. I was very engaged throughout the entire book and I finished it in one sitting.

A solidly creepy and emotional MG horror novel. The exploration of the family relationships was really well done and I enjoyed the writing style a lot.

I really wish half star ratings were possible, because 3 seems too high and 2 seems too low. Even taking into account that this is MG Horror, this was a deeply disturbing book. It did raise some interesting points about "perfection" that definitely got me thinking. However, I felt that Steve was blamed (both in his thoughts and by other characters) for his mental health, which is unsettling. I did like how Jon Klassen's illustrations complemented the story. And, for sure, I am afraid of wasps and bees from here on.

Don't know what to do with this one. Oppel is a great writer, but this one was just strange. I usually like strange but this... I always read with my readers in mind. Who is the right fit for this one? Can't think of one.
fast-paced

Decent enough. Nothing really standout for me tho.
