Very tragic. Hard to read, but impossible to forget.
Overall this was a good read. Tells of the harrowing story of Martin and Gracia Burnham's kidnapping in the jungles of The Philippines by the Abu Sayaaf, an al Quaeda terrorist cell. Told from the perspective of Gracia Burnham who survived the hostage-for-ransom ordeal. Through all the tough times the Burnhams kept their faith and relied on God's daily provisions. On numerous occasions their lives were in limbo in firefights between the Abu Sayaaf and the Philippine Army. Gracia tells of her many emotional struggles and lack of privacy and inconveniences. She relied heavily on her husbands strength to get her through this ordeal. And, eventually she did make it, while her husband did not.
Although the story is intriguing, the story seemed to run on at many times. A lot of repetitive narrative that could have been easily compressed by at least 60-75 pages. Nevertheless, this a great story of persistence and faith with a joyful reunion in the end. If you liked, "Through Gates of Splendor" by Elisabeth Elliot you will also like this one. The stories are eerily similar in many ways.

Gripping. Heart-wrenching. Raw. Real. Give yourself time as you won't want to put this one down.
Interesting book. It does drag a bit but, overall it kept my attention.
Amazing story of the kidnapping of missionaries in the Philippines; an even more amazing story of forgiveness

What an incredible (and gripping!) story. I could hardly put this down and was impressed with the descriptive storytelling. I was brought to tears more than once as I imagined what it must have been like to endure all that they did.
I think what I will most take away from this read is the simple beauty of how Gracia honored Martin in her storytelling. She was brutally honest about her own struggles with faith and mental stability, but always managed to praise Martin for his steadfastness.
Of course, through it all, they both chose to believe God’s promises in Christ that they had based their lives on. She writes about their faith in such simple terms, but it is the simplicity that makes it beautiful and highlights God’s central role in carrying them through.
Highly recommend this story!!
