If you liked Where the Crawdads Sing, but wanted it to be a little darker, maybe a bit more gritty, this is the book for you.
I could not put this down. It reads like a true story And I had to check for a minute to make sure that it wasn’t.
I think this book was recommended to me because I liked Where the Crawdads Sing (I’m loving these books with women doing actual science!) and it did not disappoint.

meh, I felt like it was really good at the beginning but then it kind of went back and forth and already explained what was going to happen so I feel like that took a lot of the suspense away. it took me so long to get through this one even though it was pretty short.
The plot of this was so promising and intriguing, but alas the back and forth of the last 100 pages petered out and was highly disappointing. The character development fell flat.

This was one where I actually preferred the movie to the book, I watched it first and then picked up the book. I found the main character to be much more relatable in the movie. In the book she was hard to empathize with.
Took a bit for me to get into it but once I did, I couldn’t put it down. Abuse trigger warning.
Though the main character is the child of an abductor and abductee, we the readers, are not told overmuch of the mother's story. This was something I was grateful for. We see the parents through their daughter's eyes.
A compelling story of survival and motherhood.

Solid 3.5 but hesitated to bring it up to 4 stars for some reason. Good thriller; definitely kept me reading. A little grim/gory for my preference, in particular the details on "The Hunter." I think the depiction of the UP was good but I did suspend belief a bit on the distances they covered by foot. Still, overall a good read and I look forward to The Wicked Sister.
ETA: just watched the movie. Wow was that not good.
