Read like a true story. Disturbing story of psychological manipulation. Good depictions of Upper Peninsula MI. Grandparents were not likeable.
This is SO not the kind of book I normally read. It was a book club selection, and it’s not the kind of thing our book club normally chooses either. So I don’t have anything to compare it to. The last time I read a “thriller” was Mary Higgins Clark in high school.
Is this a good example of a thriller? I have no idea. But it is a terrifically nuanced depiction of the psychological abuse a psychopath inflicts on the young girl he kidnaps and the daughter they eventually have. He hides them away in the wilderness of the Upper Peninsula in Michigan, and in isolation, the daughter chooses to align herself with her seemingly powerful father instead of her seemingly weak mother. That chilled me more than anything else that happened.
Told in flashbacks from the daughter’s point of view, what starts as a horrible situation just gets worse. It was a good reading experience that broadened my reading horizons, but it but didn’t convince me that I want to read more books of this type- too gruesome, too disturbing. Not my cup of tea. I’m too old to read stuff that disturbs me so much that I can’t sleep!!

Fast paced, the writing style was engaging, I was intrigued by the plot and wanted to find out what happened. Picked up this book because I saw the movie trailer and I think it would make an entertaining movie
I think an eleven year old with tattoos would look hella cool
Wow I love how the author writes. I felt I was there but it wasn’t too descriptive. Definitely some twist I didn’t see coming. But it made me understand the good and the bad in people
