This audiobook was a quick listen. I did not predict the ending. This book was suspenseful. The manipulation was intense.

While there are many content warnings for this book (as there are for most mystery/thriller books in general), I do not think that the author went into graphic detail about triggering things (which is good). For example, TW:
infidelity
: there was frequent mentioning of the event occurring, but not explicit detailed descriptions that I felt like was overly in-depth. I think the author did a great job of describing the things in the content warning, but overall kept it brief, so that it wouldn’t be triggering/activating for most readers.

The only part that I found confusing was how many characters to keep track of. I made a list and will put it under the spoiler’s section.

Least spoilers character list:
Patrick Kilgore -
Husband and father.

Lindsey Kilgore -
Patrick’s first wife.

Stephanie Kilgore -
Patrick’s second wife. Has 2 twins, Emma and Jackie. Friends and neighbors with Hannah.

Hannah -
is married to Ben and has a son named Teddy. She is friends with Stephanie.

Erica Voss.

Nile Foot -
is married to Nancy and has a son named Henry. He works with Patrick.

Carrie -
receptionist.

Cheryl Manning -
is married to Gary and has a son named Devon.

Greg Miller -
a coworker/friend of Patrick’s.

Robert Lang -
attorney

Lindsey - Patrick’s first wife. Died in an accident. Creemore, CO

Erica Voss - Lindsey’s best friend before she died. Had an affair with Patrick while still married to Lindsey. She is Devon’s biological birth mom. Blackmailed Cheryl and Gary for money for medical school in exchange for her baby. She later blackmailed Stephanie and Patrick for money in exchange to not re-open the case of the accidental death of Patrick’s first wife, Lindsey.

Nile Foot- a coworker/partner at Patrick’s architectural firm. Married to Nancy. Has a history of affairs - one with Anne O’Doud 8 years ago. He also had an affair with Erica in Aresford, recently. Has a son named Henry.

This was an okay story, but I kept waiting for the big climax moment that seemed to come really late. Like it seemed kinda clear what was ~going on~, and I was waiting for the reveal. But I do love a little wrap-up epilogue.

I was pulled in right away as always from Lapena. I read almost all of it in one day!

Multiple POVs told in 3rd person, but there wasn’t a lot of character development-compared to some of her other novels, we really don’t get to know the characters that well, which I would’ve liked. I think we could’ve had more depth if there were fewer characters to look at.

I predicted some plot twists very early on, especially the big twist, but a couple others were a surprise. So that was kind of a let down and why I didn’t rate it 5 stars. Ending was slightly rushed as it quickly tied up most of the story but left one piece open. The “cliffhanger” worked well in my opinion though.

Overall a fast paced story that held my attention and helped me finally read again after being sick, but not my favorite from Lapena.

Good story line, enjoyed the ending twists. Just very repetitive.

4.5

4.5 rounded up to 5 stars. Loved it, and honestly didn't figure everything out until it was all laid out for us at the end.  One thing though...
like, is everyone in the world pretty much a murderer just waiting for their opportunity?  MY GOODNESS the morals of these fictional people...lol.
Definitely entertaining though and it kept me on the edge of my seat.
