But who is Dr. Delaware without Robin?? Dark times in the Kellermanverse. Book 17/40

i wasn't expecting this book to be as wonderful as it was. i generally don't like authors like kellerman - but this was absolutely wonderful. so well done. and i believe i finished it within a day or two. quite a quick read but it stays with you.

REVIEW OF A COLD HEART (SPOILERS AHEAD)

at first i was a bit thrown off with the petra connor chapters but quickly warmed up to her and her style of narration. actually, i really enjoyed the new additions (petra, eric, and allison) and i loved the different perspectives, especially milo’s. i feel the story is really shown through alex’s POV (which makes sense) and i thought the differing chapters to be refreshing. i liked getting to know each character and how they see alex, and the rest of their surroundings.
eric is probably the most interesting perspective we’ve gotten in this book: hes so strange and very obviously oversteps his boundaries as a cop (considering he broke into kevin’s apartment, imagined killing shull during surveillance, and even let a witness give him head). like genuinely what is this dude’s deal? i liked how petra got to know his childhood and how he was before the military from his parents. i thought it interesting how, during his stay in the hospital, is when petra starts looking at him in a different light. i’d like to see more of that dynamic, and it seems that kellerman has books with her as a protagonist.
the characters really pull this book through for me: i liked seeing allison and her struggles, and fell in love with her even more so when she pulled up and threatened shull with a gun. alex’s and robin’s continuous adultery was predictable, but not bad. its not easy to shake off romantic feelings when they still see each other regularly, and how robin still depends on alex for emotional support. it seems that alex is a classic cheater, considering that he even cheated on robin in some of the earlier books.
i didn’t notice a lot of weird descriptors until he described a character as a “rain forest indian”. it always catches me off guard, although i should be used to it by now.
the mystery was captivating enough. i liked the slow realistic burn of trying to figure out who did it, and the true culprit wasn’t a secret for long. it was just a matter of gathering enough advice. the psychology of gordon shull was well-woven too. i wish it didn’t end so easily, but it was satisfying enough.
i say this All the time for jonathan kellerman’s books, but i Really liked this better than the previous. it’s going to have to be my first 4/5 stars, i think.

I absolutely love the inclusion of Petra and Stahl, I think this was my favourite if his books so far.

Dr. Delaware is certainly moody in this book, but overall, this storyline was much more enjoyable than the past few novels. Sturgis has a suspect from the beginning, but the way suspense is built throughout is quite nice. The identity of the "bad guy" wasn't a total surprise, but I enjoyed how all the clues came together.
