I listened to this book on audible, and I have to tell you I absolutely loved it. The narrator had this husky, serious voice that set the overall tone of Tana perfectly and used distinct voices for every character. And normally I’m not a huge fan of music in audiobooks but they used it so well that I found myself getting chills every time those haunting tones played. If you enjoy listening to audiobook even a little, listen to this one.
Okay on to the actual story.
Scary Vampires. In Young Adult. Something I didn’t think I was going to see again. I am a sucker for all things vampires, but usually have to go to adult novels if I want ones that remind me of the classic, scary yet still seductive vampires that I originally fell in love with. But Holly Black managed to maintain that classic terror but still made her vampires sexy and enticing. Immediately, I was hooked.
Tana herself is utterly fantastic. From the get go, she is level headed and needs saving by no one. She is the one who makes a plan, takes charge, and saves everyone, even a vampire she knew nothing about. I loved her extremely dysfunctional relationship with her not boyfriend Aiden. These two just did more and more outlandish things to each other just to prove to the other that they weren’t going to be the first to flinch. And Aiden just oozes charisma and draws you into this messed up relationship as completely as he does Tana. The only complaint is that I wanted more about Gabriel. That’s not to say he isn’t in the book a lot. It was that he was just so dark and intriguing that I wanted him in every single scene. I wanted to know everything about him.
There wasn’t a moment I was bored in this novel, even when the pace slowed a little. I let Black’s incredible prose and world building pull me through this story even when it wasn’t action packed. I wanted to know everything I could about this world where vampires were a disease, sectioned off from the rest of the world, but yet still broadcasted on the internet and television, enticing teenagers everywhere.
In short, Holly Black was able to make a young adult vampire novel that scares and entices you, with real, flawed characters in a completely unique world filled with rage, revenge, and romance. The only failing in this book was that it was too damn short.

3.5 stars.
“I am used to girls screaming, and your screams your screams will be sweeter than another's cries of love."
Ugh i love him and i love the way he is not human. Holly does it so well, i love her for not sugarcoating the none human characters. I think i would’ve loved this book more if i read it in a different time.
Spoiler alert kinda.
I’m gonna pretend that she does become a vampire and they go vampire hunting together bc well i believe they would, bc she would crave and he would let her.

I liked the book! it was interesting story, interesting characters, but not Tana though, lol. The cover is amazing! at some points I was going to give it 3 stars, but when I reached the end of the book it was too lovely! a good way to end it I think. nice though.
