Eddie Winston is ninety years old. He has lived and he has loved, but he has never been kissed.

A true gentleman and incurable romantic, Eddie spends his days volunteering at a charity shop, where he sorts through the donations of the living and the dead, preserving letters and tokens of love along the way. It is here that he meets Bella, a troubled young woman who, aged twenty-four, has just lost the love of her life.

When Bella learns that Eddie is yet to have his first kiss, she resolves to help him finally find love, sparking an adventure that will take them to unexpected places and, they hope, bring Eddie to the moment he has waited for all his life.

The One Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot was one of my favourite reads in 2023, so I was super excited her most recent release, Eddie Winston Is Looking for Love, was announced. I selected it as my December 2024 book of the month for my personal project, however, I completely did so without realizing it would publish on the final day of the year. While it ended up getting pushed into 2025, I wanted to keep it for a time when I was needing a deeply human and hopeful read.

Cronin's writing style takes some settling into, but once I got myself situated, reading this book was an absolute pleasure. A story of friendship and kindness, of love and loss, it truly digs into the most beautiful and heartbreaking elements of what it means to be human. Eddie's character is one that will stay with me for years to come and I ate up the dynamic between Bella and him. The fact Eddie saves some of the items that come into the shop, knowing that one day people may come looking for them felt so relatable. When he saves Bella's items I just wanted to hug him and was in tears.

The flashbacks, the letters, and the narrative thread all come together to create a beautiful story that tugs on the heartstrings in the best possible ways. It's the type of reminder we all need that we are never too old to live or for second chances. I adored the charity shop and Pushkin was a welcome addition.

Eddie Winston Is Looking for Love was an absolute delight! An older main character, an unlikely friendship, and themes of grief made this the perfect book for me. This was a hug in book form and reminder that there is good in the world. I just wish everyone could have an Eddie in their life. Marianne Cronin is 2/2 thus far, so I can't wait to pick up whatever she writes next.

"
Hope is a dangerous thing in the hands of the lonely."

"At a funeral, people are reminded of all the people they have lost before. Lots of people will be crying for other loves ones who've already passed. I have thought about my mother since we've been here. But funerals remind us that we too will die one day, so we are crying for ourselves as well. You're not restricted in who you cry for."

As soon as I read Marianne Cronin’s debut novel last year, I immediately added this book to my TBR list. And now, Marianne is two for two.

I absolutely loved the characters of Eddie and Bella. I know the “love story” wasn’t about them, but… wasn’t it? 🥹 They are two souls that were meant to find each other.

I don’t want to include spoilers, so all I’ll say is this may be the first book where I actually fist pumped for someone’s death. Also, the ending is a rollercoaster and literally made me sick to my stomach a few times. 😅 But well worth the read.
