"You know what this story really needs? A three-chapter dream sequence about a nightmarishly verbose infant to ham-handedly symbolize the character's guilt about his inability to procreate."

Interesting idea but I've read a similar premise before. I didn't find anything special about the way the author wrote or the story itself. Didn't connect with many characters either.

The desolation of Cormac McCarthy meets the surreal. Throughout my reading I kept picturing how this could be a whole new genre. At the end I kept picturing the road or Blood Meridian. It doesn't hold your hand and takes cues from contemporary genre TV of not over explaining every mystery, yet provides enough to satiate the reader.

I liked the premise and the build up of the book but didn't like the ending.  It also jumped between characters and times a bit more than I liked.

I read this book a lot faster than most, not because I thought it was great, but because I skimmed a number of areas. One of these was the dream scenes (probably a bad choice of books given sleep/insomnia is the subject). I have a personal dislike for dreams as part of a story, feeling that they are just nonsense filler or contrived way of explaining what is happening. I occasionally tell people about my dreams, but not to help them understand my life, just as a curiosity. Another easy area to skim was the scrambled dialogue of the insomniacs. It was a challenge to figure out what they were trying to say, but I wasn't up to it.
I enjoyed the story for the most part but wished for more. A little more exploration into the reason for the insomnia epidemic. What about the brief appearance by Maria, who could make people sleep? Chase and Jordan becoming the guys running the sleep business? There were holes in places and too much time spent in others. It was an o.k, quick read.

I truly wasn’t expecting what I found with this book. The way it intertwined dreams and reality was truly disorienting, as the author intended. I found it interesting but also dissatisfying the way we jumped between characters, always missing the primary action as it happens for them. This was one of the most interesting books I’ve ever read, but it was also deeply unsettling and upsetting. There was no salvation/resolution like I expected, and the book felt full unsure of the reality it was living in right up until the end, and I think without some sort of resolution the book feels unfinished.

It had such an interesting concept. I just wish that he hadn't left out so much. I feel like there are too many gaps, information is left out, and you don't get to know the whole story.
The end was interesting but I wasn't satisfied with it.
