Ever thought, "Eh, I've come this far in the book. I might as well finish the darn thing.?" Yep - that was me and this book. I rarely give 1 stars and that's being kind for this one. I struggled to read this. I even got the audiobook, figuring maybe that'll help me finish it. Which it sort of did.
Where to begin...
I was hoping for a nice fairy-tale "chic lit" sort of book. Instead I got a long, drawn out book full of one-sided characters, whining from all characters about the royal family lifestyle, debauchery of all kinds, and so-so writing. The book needed to be paired down because it's way too long. I never felt a connection with any of the characters, even if the book is a supposed fan fiction of the William/Kate or Harry/Meghan. Some parts were cute but overall the book just did nothing for me. It had potential. I never laughed or cheered on the characters, which I kind of hoped for in a book like this.

Painful. This book was like 500 pages long and basically a bachelor contestant marrying prince william.
I am a MASSIVE fan of the Royal family, especially the young Royals, so I knew I HAD to pick this book up! The blurb describes it as loosely based on Will and Kate's story, and for someone well versed in their story, it was easy to recognize the events - from Freddie (the Harry character) pelting his and Nick (Will)'s private secretary to a snowball while on a skiing vacation; Gemma Sands (Jecca Craig) - Nick's first love who lived in Africa; Bex (Kate) and Nick having their photo taken while at university by his uncle Edwin's (Edward's) film crew filming an unauthorized documentary; the ring and engagement shoot, etc. I didn't find that this detracted from the book, rather, I enjoyed the little asides for Royal followers!
The book is told through the perspective of Bex, an American exchange student, who meets Prince Nicholas at Oxford and quickly falls in love. What follows is a story that spans eight years (just like Will and Kate) where we witness the struggles that Bex goes through to be with Nick, their breakup, the engagement, and eventually their wedding (though there is quite a twist with that)! I really liked the first person narrative in this situation, although it would have been interesting to see Nick's side/impressions in some of the situations they were in. The authors do an excellent job showing how difficult it would be to date the future King of England - from having to hide the relationship from everyone but your closest friends, to the hardship of being dissected in the media. The media harrassment was particularly well done, and seemed to be very true to what we all saw Kate going through when she was outed as Will's girlfriend - being chased down outside work and her home and her hair/clothing being dissected on the internet. We get to see how these things affect Bex and her relationship to Nick and her family. Very heartbreaking and difficult!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, especially the beginning section when they meet and fall in love at Oxford! I particularly loved their bonding over the cheesily wonderful sounding soap opera Devour! I had thought this would be a five star book, however, because I couldn't stand Lacey (Bex's fame hungry sister - even before Bex was with Nick, I found I didn't like her. She always had to have her way and Bex always let her. Lacey was just too selfish in my opinion, though she was quick to point out selfishness in others!) and the issues she caused, as well as I found the last bit of the book to be a bit depressing and then wrapped up very quickly! I did like the very end, though I wonder if the authors have plans for another book, as I still had some questions! Overall, Nick and Bex's story had a lot of really sweet moments, though a lot of the time was spent on their breakup and problems in their relationship! I really enjoyed this "inside" look at the fictional Royal family and would love to have more with Nick, Bex, and Freddie (though maybe less Lacey ;)

I am exhausted. When I started reading last night, I was only a few pages into the second chapter. Around 9:00 am, I was crying and ready to finally stop and head to bed once I got the sad bit out of the way. After I finished crying, I was just too hooked again to stop. I eventually decided that I needed to eat some breakfast if I was going to commit to reading this book until I finished it or dropped. I had cake. It had blueberries in it, but it was still as healthy of a decision as choosing to stay up all night.
Any book that I decide to skip sleeping to read automatically earns five stars. I also really enjoyed the characters and thought the suspense was very successful. I'm pretty sure that I'll be annoyed about the cliffhanger after a nap, but I'm just too tired to care right now.

A fine book. Basically Will and Kate fanfic but fine. However, I did not find the end payout worth the effort.
Accurately described by other reviewers as royal fan fiction. But not terribly charming or original and way too long. Disclaimer - I am definitely not the target audience for this one (and may need to rethink the book group that put this one on my reading list).
