I know what I am getting when I open the cover of a Dickens novel, and have to gather up a certain amount of endurance to make it through to the end. His brilliant writing and wit carry me along despite impatience with many characters who are caricatures, as well as his view of the perfect woman, who is selfless and ever loyal to her doltish family. I learned about the ways of debtors' prison in the Victorian era, a cruel but oddly benign institution.

If I got paid by the word, I would write over a thousand pages as well. Old Charlie boy could have wrapped this one up in 300 pages, or less; the plot (and the several hundred subplots) move at a slower pace than the Australian Government recognising climate change.

I liked this book a lot--Dickens always has a great combination of humor, pathos, intrigue, and social commentary. Some great characters, especially Flora. Not my favorite of Dickens's books chiefly because the denouement seems to come out of nowhere.

What a book. One of Dickens's best - a truly fantastic, moving clever novel, and an absolute favourite of mine.

What a long saga
