Excellent book. Well written, kept me entertained and intrigued throughout. Great for reluctant older readers, including boys, as it has some fighting/violence as well.

But it was a Printz honor book...

maybe I'm not smart enough, but I didn't get it.

Ed Kennedy is an unremarkable 19-year-old who "accidentally" stops a bank robbery and then begins getting Aces in the mail directing him to help people.

And no one thinks this is weird.

And he actually does it.

Which lent this whole novel a sense of incredulity to begin with, because I don't know anyone who would get anonymous addresses of people they don't know and then set off to spy on them and - in some cases - threaten to kill them.

The scenes where he actually does help people were nice - like the old woman who mistakes him for her long-dead husband, and he plays along, reading her Wuthering Heights and inviting her over for Christmas.

But then he beats up teenagers and hits on a 15-year-old, and the weirdness was back.

And the ending? I didn't get it. Like I really still have no idea what happened. When I finish this review, I plan to google it. Seriously.

Review to come, suffice to say I enjoy the book.

This is another amazing Zusak book! The themes in this novel are absolutely heart-touching and every little thing will make your heart feel warm. There is some mild language in this novel and some suggestible content, but it is an overall amazing book. It is in my top ten favorite books and I think everyone should read it.

4.5/5. Really, really good, it's just I feel like something's missing. And I also feel like I'm too easy to please and give out 5 stars too much....

sincerely one of the worst things I’ve ever read. Bad writing, simultaneously contrived and nonsensical plot, and a 20-year old white man “woe is me” narrator with a grandiose sense of self who ends up getting everything he wants. it’s a poor reflection on me that I finished the book at all and tbh couldn’t put it down sometimes because I needed to know how the asinine plot ended up playing out

3.5, maybe? Stretches of triteness frequently shrink before moments of beauty - shrink, but don’t disappear.

It’s no Book Thief, but you can feel it beneath the surface more than occasionally.
