The message of the book is 4 or 5 stars. But the actually story was a three. Although the writing was excellent

Not nearly as good as *The Book Thief.* But I love Zusak's fresh writing style, and his obvious love of language.

I picked up this book because The Book Thief was such a profound book for me and because I am hooked on Zusak's style of writing. Though this book was quite the change of pace and place from TBT--instead of war-torn Germany it's a grimy, unnamed modern Australian city, and instead of following a few years of a young girl's life, it spans only a few months of Ed Kennedy's--I wasn't disappointed. This book moves fast; between Zusak's short-sentence style and his protagonist's speedy story, there's not much time to put the book down. I had to go back and reread things occasionally for their full/deep meaning to sink in, but it was always worth the pause. Without being quite as thoroughly and wonderfully devastating as The Book Thief, I Am The Messenger managed to weave its way into my head and my heart with its honesty and the simple yet great beauty of its words and the relationships they portray.

"The Book Thief" often takes the spotlight when people look at Markus Zusak, and it is well-deserved, but this book deserves more. It's definitely a more mature YA book, but it takes a main character that is a little older than your typical YA protagonist and not nearly as clean-cut and turns him into such an interesting character.

Fantastic first chapter however, the rest is disappointing, saccharine, emotionally manipulative and absurd. I was really sorry to read this after The Book Thief, which is one of the best books I've ever read.

Only got a few pages in .... Before I decided I couldn't read more. Language and iffy content. Too bad after book thief.
