3.97 AVERAGE

I wish Goodreads allowed half stars because I am definitely in the 3.5 camp. This is a fast read and really enjoyable. It has all of the classic elements of a murder mystery, (the small, close knit town, rumors and gossip surrounding the murders, some morally ambiguous characters, etc.) but the cause of the murders, the eventual reveal of the murderer, and the motive all make this special.

My slightly above mid range review is mostly because I wish there was a bit more. I would have loved a closer look at some of these characters and maybe some more depth to Janina's dreams and visions. This would make a great movie though, and I would recommend it anyone who is wondering about it.

I like the story and the main character. The anger she expresses is very relatable. Some parts, especially the horoscope bits, are a bit dry though. I'm mostly giving it 3 stars instead of 4 because it's not exactly my cup of tea.

"...he gave me all his details. i wrote them down, said thank you and, pulling up my hood, headed for the exit. in the doorway i heard them snorting with laughter, and the very words I had predicted: 'crazy madwoman.'"

this book is a SLOOOOOOOOOOOW BURN. it seemed to drag a bit until maybe the last 40 or so pages then i was IN.

"sometimes I think that only the sick are truly healthy."

mrs. duszejko is riddled with ailments. these ailments are physical, perhaps psychosomatic? this novel discusses suffering. suffering of animals. suffering due to grief. suffering of a small village ravaged by murder. are ailments a form of punishment? what is rightful punishment and who is deserving? who is righteous enough to decide who suffers?

morals of extracting resources. reclamation of nature. looking to the stars for answers. hunter vs. hunted. punishment. justice.

I don't trust any reviewer who calls the main character 'Janina.'
