I might like this more in physical form than audiobook, but it was a slog to get through. The narrator has a pleasant voice, but I found the subject matter utterly exhausting.

It took a bit of time for me to get into this one, but I found myself quite enjoying this book. It centres around a rare character, an elderly superstitious old lady, who despite her expected certainty and recriminations of the sorry state of the world, is full of surprises and a rich company of colourful friends, acquaintances and enemies. The mysterious chronic ailments which afflict her (very much seems like Lupus) couple well with the largely windswept barren wintery setting of a few tiny houses on a forsaken plateau - destined to be wiped away once the quarry at its foot renews operation. The main character is a devout astrologer, and this produces some very unique imagery of constellations. An air of defeated 'back-in-my-day' nostalgia is nonetheless intertwined with the main character's indomitable willfulness to oppose what she sees as the gruesome slaughter of animals for human comfort and sustenance. Along the way the book picks up her acquaintances and neighbours, shaping and being shaped by this morose and punishing setting on the outskirts of civilization with the promise of a more soft and civilized country beyond the porous national borders. Unfortunately, however much I grew to like the unique main character, her interesting observations and dark peculiar thoughts on her time and her friends, I could not find the same interest in the murder plot of the story. It's neither a cheap twist nor an utterly predictable revelation but it seemed rather unremarkable in the context of the laboriously described setting and cast of characters who populate the little Polish village in which a series of mysterious gruesome murders occur.
