the narrator is rather unique and truly mesmerizing. this adds a sharp edge to the novel. the uniqueness of the perspective and the voice of the narrator shapes the setting perfectly; a tiny village in eastern europe. janina is a peculiar woman with a peculiar personality. her words are eerie. familiar but tinged with strange emotions. this gives the novel a fairy tale sort of atmosphere. the polish village feels trapped in time. on a superficial level the story is a mystery and crime novel with great gothic atmosphere and plot. however, the reflections and the voice of janina elevate the novel. it’s off kilter but also strangely compelling. can any of us deny all the horrors and crimes that have been committed in the name of science and logic. it’s hard not to see how her points are quite compelling. it’s hard to argue that rationality hasn’t caused immense catastrophic horrors in the course of history. i found janina to be extremely refreshing and extremely human. this book was a great surprise.

PopSugar Reading Challenge 2024: A book set in the snow
Drive your plow was an eccentric and philosophical little gem of a book.
Highly quoteable all the way through, we follow the musings of Mrs Duszekjo - keen vegetarian and astrologist - who makes a convincing character, living a relatively isolated life on a Polish plateau.
Despite the bleak location, Mrs Duszekjo has warm friendships with a few of her neighbours, and spends her time meditating on nature and the world around her, and how it all relates to the stars.
I did struggle to stay focused on the narrative, despite a worthwhile story being told. Too often I found my mind drifting, and it took far too long to finish for such a short book.
Nonetheless, Drive your plow created a vivid character and sense of place. For once, I had managed to work out where the story was heading early on, but that didn't stop me from enjoying watching it all unfold.

I have unfortunately DNF’d this book at 75%. It is SO boring and I tried so hard to get through it. I mean it won a nobel prize in literature and was on the booker prize shortlist! Why? couldn’t tell you. But I just cannot trudge through this any longer.
