Although much more complex and contemplative than this genre may suggest, this text is essentially a whodunnit mystery that starts off with a mysterious death that drives the suspense and tension of the rest of the storyline. This may end up being my favorite read of the year (and in my top reads of all time). Even though this is a translated text, Tokarczuk's writing is so lyrical and precise in exploring reflections on life and death, the hierarchy and interactions between living things, and our own humanity in relation to our own self-worth and others. I annotated so many quotes that I had to re-read several times because of her ability to describe an abstract idea or concept that I have never heard written about so beautifully. If you're looking for a quirky, whimsical, mysterious read that's not quite like anything you've read before, I would definitely recommend picking this one up. And then please let's get together and talk about it for a few hours, because I'll certainly be thinking about this one for quite some time.

I mean… it won the Nobel Prize for Literature. It was written well. I didn’t get on with the astrology hobby subplot or allusion or whatever it was meant to do. I enjoyed the reveal. I enjoyed her epitaphs for the village people. I was amazed at the interesting vocabulary in this book.

This is a mysterious book that creates a dark, tense feeling of menace. The writer paints the protagonist Duszejko as an outsider who studies horoscopes and William Blake and who lives in the forests of Poland. She is a vegetarian who believes firmly in animal rights while living in a community where many of her fellow residents don't appear to share her values. She suffers from numerous "Ailments" that afflict her in multiple ways and these add to the portrayal of her as a kind of tortured psychic or witch figure. The discovery of a body begins the study of her life and her interactions with those in her community, and there is a growing sense throughout the novel that none of this is going to end well. The setting of the forest is portrayed as dangerous and hostile to humans and adds to the impression of menace. A dark gem of a book that highlights the marginalisation of those who question seemingly established social norms, and the simmering undercurrents that exist in any community.
