คาฟคาวิจารณ์สังคมทุนนิยมสมัยนี้ ว่าคนเราต้องอุทิศตนให้การทำงาน หาเงินมาจุนเจือตัวเอง(หรือครอบครัว) ทำให้เรามี'ประโยชน์' แต่เมื่อเราไม่สามารถทำงานอย่างว่าได้แล้ว เราก็จะหมดประโยชน์ไปอย่างนั้นหรือ เหมือนกับสถาณการณ์ที่เกรกอร์ได้ประสบ ตอนยังไม่กลายร่างเขาเป็นคนที่ครอบครัวรัก เป็นผู้สนับสนุนหลักของครอบครัว เขาเป็นคน'มีประโยชน์' ตอนกลายเป็นแมลง เขาไม่สามารถแม้แต่หาอาหารได้เอง เรื่องทำงานหาเงินยิ่งไม่ต้องพูดถึง ทำให้ตัวเขาเองเหมือนกลายเป็นภาระของครอบครัวเข้าไปทุกที เสมือนคน'ไร้ประโยชน์' ความคิดนี้ยิ่งชัดเจนเมื่อตอนที่เกรกอร์พบว่าตนเป็นแมลง แต่ในหัวเขาก็มีแค่ความคิดว่า 'จะไปทำงานสายแล้ว' 'หัวหน้าจะว่าไหม' โดยที่ไม่ได้ตื่นตระหนกเลยว่าสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นกับตนนั้นแปลกประหลาดเหลือเกิน
ในอีกแง่หนึ่งเมื่อเราได้ศึกษาชีวประวัติของคาฟคามา เขาไม่ลงรอยกับพ่อนัก ซึ่งเขาได้แสดงสิ่งนี้ผ่านเรื่องสั้นเรื่องนี้ด้วย

A combination of "what the heck am I reading" and "aww poor bug-man" went through my mind as I read this. There are many ways to interpret this novella on a deeper level, but aside from that, I loved how Kafka succeeds in making the reader quickly absorb the transformation of Gregor as a logical element of this work's setting. No fear of himself, no shock from what has happened to him, none of that. He just tries to live on as well as he can, and nothing more. In that regard, he is not the most important character, but a fascinating device in service to the other characters.
I will fully admit I read this as part of a final push towards my Goodreads goal because it's really short (not a great motivation), but it was certainly worth it, and I was going to read this classic story sooner or later anyway.
