Are you sure this was supposed to be YA Dystopian?

*Checks cover *

Well, it’s certainly not reading as one.

The whole book was a cover for female MC to flirt with male MC while simultaneously pretending she’s not flirting and is confused why she's catching feels. There is almost nothing else to this book, it is inescapable.

I genuinely don’t understand why this book went in this direction. We had several characters with so many loose plot points, but as soon as we get to the second book? Bam. All characters are effectively greyed out apart from our two MCs.

I say greyed out because even when they were mentioned, they were as bland as cardboard. Everyone apart from the two MCs were so two dimensional that they could have swapped names and I wouldn’t have noticed.

No one is unique here guys.

Only our special snowflake MCs.

Who got on my nerves so much.

In continuation of the terrible, nonsensical things that female MC did (not including prioritising people who she constantly says she doesn’t trust and she should hate over people who RAISED her) : she lied, she stole, she manipulated others, she sacrifices people’s lives and feelings for the sake of her own self, and all the while is obnoxious about it.

Female MC constantly criticises the Renegades for something that she believes them to have done. When I say constantly, I mean constantly. She is a broken record and this is getting to the stage of plot for the sake of plot. Not because of actual emotions or growing, or processing new information, or morally grey areas. No. This is: A happened, therefore B, therefore C.

It’s all a means to an end.

Male MC is so concerned about himself and wanting to see life a certain way that he never wakes up and smells the roses. Irritating and negligent, but at least he's got a bit more brain so not as infuriating as female MC.

In summary, this book could be broken down into:
70% insufferable romance
25% “the renegades betrayed my family. I must avenge them.”
5% actual plot
