When you die, little Devil, a kingdom will fall to its knees and crawl to your bier. In a thousand years and a thousand after that, they will still sing of the Prince and his Devil.
When the Saint of War comes calling a young servant girl answers the command. She grows and learns how to fight all in service of her Prince, until she becomes a lethal weapon, a legend. But the war never stops and she's forced to keep fighting no matter what.
This is a hard one to review because it's only 30 pages and the plot hinges on a spoiler. All I can say is that it is incredible. With only that small amount of pages Alix E. Harrow manages to create an entire universe. There is action, and loss, and even love. Everything about this was just right. The language, the tone, the second person point of view, wow.

I don't always retain the details or plotlines of books I read, but I don't think I'll physically be able to to forget this for the rest of my life. Rent free in my head, in a good way and bad way.
I'd like to note that I'm literally sobbing on my bedroom floor as I write this out so take that as you will.

This book is so short, but it has affected me in many ways.
Did I actually finished the book? Did did it finish me?
I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this.

You were a child the first time the Saint of War came to you.
The Six Deaths of the Saint is a fantasy genre short story about a young, malnourished, and often ill girl that is visited by the Saint of War on her (presumed) deathbed, told mostly through second person perspective narration. Using evocative prose and unique character development, The Six Deaths of the Saint examines what it is worth to be seen, and what it means to be known, and to be loved. There is also a bittersweet (and likely unintentional) thematic parallel to The Iron Giant animated film that I think this story explores very well. I am genuinely in awe that such a striking narrative was fit into less than thirty pages.
Moderate: Body horror, Injury/Injury detail, and Suicide
Minor: Ableism and Child death
