When you die, little Devil, a kingdom will fall to its knees and crawl to your bier. In a thousand years and a thousand after that, they will still sing of the Prince and his Devil.

When the Saint of War comes calling a young servant girl answers the command. She grows and learns how to fight all in service of her Prince, until she becomes a lethal weapon, a legend. But the war never stops and she's forced to keep fighting no matter what.

This is a hard one to review because it's only 30 pages and the plot hinges on a spoiler. All I can say is that it is incredible. With only that small amount of pages Alix E. Harrow manages to create an entire universe. There is action, and loss, and even love. Everything about this was just right. The language, the tone, the second person point of view, wow.
It almost makes you wonder if the author herself had her own "saint" guiding her hand.

Not to be dramatic but this is one of the best things I've read and I feel like a different person than I was an hour ago when I started it.

I don't always retain the details or plotlines of books I read, but I don't think I'll physically be able to to forget this for the rest of my life. Rent free in my head, in a good way and bad way.

I'd like to note that I'm literally sobbing on my bedroom floor as I write this out so take that as you will.

Favourite quote:
"This time, when I push my face into the pool, when the water fills my mouth and floods my lungs, I am smiling. They will never sing my name."

This might be my favourite book of the year. Which is shocking at less than an hour long. I listened twice, and found the second listening just as rewarding. The writing is vivid and doesn't shy away from uncomfortable topics, but also doesn't linger. The cast of characters felt interesting and complex in attitudes, motivations and goals. This is one of those books that I think everyone would benefit from reading and makes me re-evaluate my rankings of others books. Just wow.

I really enjoyed this short story. The writing was stunning and the way how the story was laid out was fantastic because it made it so intriguing.

It was a powerful story indeed, and I would definitely recommend reading it!

The ending was perfect! That last line was so beautiful!

“This time, when I push my face into the pool, when the water fills my mouth and floods my lungs, I am smiling. They will never sing my name.”

Wow. ✨

This short story does put me in the mind of soldiers and poets and kings. And legends, most of all. The conflicting feelings in this were visceral, and it felt like watching a tragedy unfold without any way to stop it from happening. It makes me think about regret and belief, and if i would change anything about my own life if i could do it all over. I would like to reread in a print format sometime in the future.
