This started somewhat slow. Then progressed into kinda sick and sad, and I nearly stopped reading. But I hate reading reviews from DNF where they don't know what they're talking about so I powered through, and I'm glad I did. I told myself after the masturbation scene that if this generic "the exorcist" plot continued I would stop. Then things turned. I was surprised over and over until it developed into its own monster so twisted you aren't sure how you're supposed to feel. By the end, it was close to magnificent.

Be warned: this is a psychological thriller/horror. Is it paranormal? Is it more? Or is it obviously so simple, you'll wonder by the end what really happened?

I've been waiting so long for a well written and researched horror book. This, is that. I'm thoroughly impressed and I thank the author for putting in the effort that most horror writers do not.

Many people have raved about this book, how good it is, how scary it is.

It didn't work that way for me. A family of two parents, two daughters, is torn apart when one girl might/might not be possessed. I'm having a hard time pinpointing why it didn't work for me. Not even on the level of a parent of worrying about how to help a child who obviously very desperately needs help. I always felt one level removed from the action and the emotion, like it was being spelled out correctly but I just didn't feel it.

A good story, could have been scarier as a ghost story but it was really focused on the people and how they reacted and lived rather than actual ghosts which were well written.

Never was this book what I was expecting. I enjoyed the ever unreliable narrator. Its not even her fault shes so unreliable. Truly enjoyed the exploration of trauma, societal pressures, religion, mental health, and the horror fandom.
