It was the most annoying book I've ever read. It is probably due to the fact that I always amazed on how Sinclair take care of something. However, I presume it was the actual reason this book become the prequel to show how imperfect the Sinclair actually was. Summer in Beechwood was enchanting even when lies were the foundation of the family. The book was narrated from Carrie, the oldest daughter point of view. It took a set as a flashback after Carrie met her son's ghost, Johnny after the arson of Windermere. She had always been seeing ghost or should I say the drug influence that made her saw the ghost. It was started with rosemary, her younger sister who was swept by the wave that kept visiting her every morning.

Carrie was a mess since the beginning. She was different than the rest of the Sinclair, she didn't have the square jaw as her siblings had so she had a surgery. She wasn't that attractive among boys unlike her siblings too. She saw a scratched photo in her mom pearl box that turned out to be her actual dad. She had a crush on Pfeff, a friend of Yardley's boyfriend but he was a jerk all along. She killed Pfeff because he almost doing things on Penny. She was the one who cleaned the mess afterwards. Life wasn't easy for Carrie but she did what the Sinclair should do, keep her chin high and take care things she should be taking care of.

i've always maintained that books don't particularly need prequels but this one proved me pleasantly wrong. it definitely explained some things from 'we were liars' and was even somewhat better.

to put it without spoilers, the story is about four sisters and their parents and the ways in which they can fuck each other up.

with its poetic writing and clever metaphorical allusions to fairytales, 'family of liars' makes for a poignant and heart-wrenching read.

3.5 stars.
