Not as good as we were liars but still loved - I’m a fan of E.Lockhart

I gave the first book 4 stars, this one is about 3.5. I thought it would be closer to 4, but the more I thought about it, 3.5 seemed right.
It definitely feels like an unnecessary spinoff, but I liked it. There was a lot less tension than in the first book though, barely any twists (the big one kinda came out of nowhere for me, no real build up), the romance was central to the story (which is totally fine, I just feel like it took over a lot of the book), the plot felt very similar to the original (with slight differences), the writing style is a bit different, and the characters are still (supposed to be) unlikable.
I didn't get the same sense of urgency, like I need to read more and finish, the way I did with We Were Liars, this was more mellow, but still easy to read. I do miss the lyrical writing though, it's as if the author got criticised for it too much and then decided to cut it down to a minimum.
Carrie wasn't as compelling of a character as Cadence was, nor as dramatic, but I like that she could alsosee ghosts . At the same time, I think it was that specific thing that made this whole book feel like something we've seen before. Which we have...in We Were Liars. But at least we see where Cadence gets it from!!
There was a real missed opportunity here, to tie things into the first book, but it all felt so random, as much as We Were Liars felt planned out, this one did not. I'm also not sure if I'd reread it. I'll definitely reread book one, but this...I guess we'll see.
I have medium-high hopes for the sequel that's out in November, please don't let me down!!

I enjoyed the added depth this prequel gave to characters we met in We Were Liars. The family relationships were interesting and I enjoyed the drama.
