This book was fascinating to read since it was written before the discovery of the wreck of the Titanic. Definitely my favorite Cussler story

After 40 years, the writing still holds up.

Raise The Titanic by Clive Cussler

This was my first taste of Cussler and I absolutely loved it! There aren't many people who aren't inrigued by the story of the Titanic and Dirk Pitt and the NUMA crew attemtping to raise it was exciting, full of action and fun.

This was a good book full of action and some mystery.
I was going to give this book three stars but the whole story of the salvage of the Titanic and the ending led me to give this book four stars. The way Clive Cussler writes this book is slightly different from the way he writes the books later on in the series, but for how the book turns out it works.

Unlike many of the series that have come out in the past 5 years, Cussler's Dirk Pitt novels just get better. There are still infuriating generalizations about women, but less of those with each publication.

It was interesting to read the mechanics of the sinking and raising, since this book was written before they actually found the titanic. Many of Cussler's assumptions were spot-on or just slightly off, the biggest difference being that the actual ship split in 2 pieces but Pitt finds it whole.

I would think that the raising of the titanic would be challenging enough, but he had to throw in a soviet espionage plot twist. The rest was good enough on it's own, but you have to expect that with Mr. Cussler.

You know, I was really hoping I'd be less disappointed in this book than the second book, and I guess I was to an extent. But the toxic masculinity is still there, even if it only reared it's ugly head a few times. I think this book was greatly helped by the fact that the main character, Dirk Pitt, was only in about half the book. It made it more bearable for me since he's such a total douchebag. I'm just not at all impressed with him. They keep saying he's good at his job, but I'm waiting to see the actual evidence of it. All he seems to be good at is treating women like trash.

I'd pay good money for a book where all the women he's bedded and discarded and insulted casually behind their backs come back to fight him. The man is scum.

As far as the adventure of it goes, I had some fairly minor complaints. The mystery of it was great - the Titanic is such a beloved topic by so many. As a line of events in a story, it's a pretty interesting thing. However, with all the frankly bad science and inaccuracies about the Titanic - including information that was well known about the condition of the Titanic that was conveniently ignored by Cussler - it really killed it for me. Plus, with the USA now free of the fear of Nuclear Missile attacks at the end of the book, I feel like there should be an arms race from hell. However, it likely will never get mentioned because it's such a stupidly overpowered defense system.

Between the poor treatment of his sole female character as essentially a sexy lamp for people to obsess over and the lack of actual realism in the science, this really just isn't that impressive as a book. I don't recommend it. I especially don't recommend it if you're a nerd about the Titanic.
