Al Giordino makes his appearance in this book and seems a bit slow on the uptake ;) Good to see that he gets smarter in the later books. The writing is still a tad on the non-PC side but is better than the first few books in the series. Dirk Pitt's character is slowly getting more honed.
One has to suspend one's belief to enjoy these kind of books. I did, because I needed to read something uncomplicated.
Raise the Titanic! by Clive Cussler
Book starts out in 1900's and it's the night of the sinking Titanic where a man aboard knows the ship hit the iceberg and will sink as he goes to where he's stored the element that was mined that will be needed for future war projects.
Story follows a lot of different groups: one who finds the horn-the horn that was played on the Titantic, Sicilian project, money paid to survivors from miners who died in the past, other private groups that are funded from the government, the President who pursuades others to do things they don't really want to do and a lot more in different countries.
There is so much action and adventure, never mind the mystery surrounding it all. Bit of romance and you have a well rounded book for everybody.
Byzantium is the special mineral that everybody wants a piece of. two month submersible that can stay under water for more than 2 months time might just be the answer they need to get the minerals.
Thing that amazes me is that this book was written before they even located the Titanic so this is quite the story about it all.
Just when things are on an even keel a hurricane is in the area...

Fast paced, easy read. My first by this author. Gonna explore more before coming back to any of his.
Had to re-read this one after the depressing "The Race". Titanic holds the expected quality of Cussler for sure :-)
I liked it, but the ending was a little bit more of a mess than his previous novels. That said, I will continue to devour cheap Cussler thrills. :)
I started it, then realized I'm bored of Dirk Pitt books. Never finished.
I decided to read a Dirk Pitt book after noticing that Sahara, a Matthew McConaughy movie I enjoyed a while back, was based on a literary character. I decided to read this book instead of [b:Sahara|41716|Sahara (Dirk Pitt, #11)|Clive Cussler|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1169751349s/41716.jpg|2467487] since I was not familiar with the specific story, but was familiar with the ship.
As for this book, it was interesting although beyond unrealistic at times. It was fairly well written, although I would not call it spellbinding.
I did have a few specific gripes with the book (spoilers follow):
- Although it is a Dirk Pitt adventure, Dirk's character only appears in one paragraph in the first 150 pages. This left me feeling misled by the "Dirk Pitt Adventure" stamp on the cover of the book, although the first 150 pages were interesting, regardless.
- I could not stand how Clive Cussler wrote Dana Seagram, the only female character of note in the book. I know this was written in the 1980's, but it was seriously cringe-worthy.
- The only character that truly suffers at the end is the one person who sacrificed everything for the good of his country. Even the Russian villain is given a reprieve at the end, but the heroic scientist that saves America loses both his wife and his mind. Not even after Dirk finally finds the macguffin, or when the Sicilian Defense actually works and saves the country, is he revisited. I found this oddly unsatisfying for this type of book.
I am now debating whether to pick up another Dirk Pitt book and give it a shot, hoping the flaws I found were specific to this book and not to Clive Cussler.

This was such a weird book. Maybe I'm biased because I prefer character driven stories rather than plot driven and this had limited and erratic character development - but it also had a strange plot. The first half was fairly boring and we didn't have much Dirk Pitt even though this is supposedly a Dirk Pitt novel. When he finally did become a main part of the story, it was interesting for awhile and I thought I might move this to 3 stars. But then it got weird again. Not for me.
