the first act is a bit slow and i was having a bit of trouble keeping up with the many characters and their houses. i'm also not confident i really understood all those necromantic theorems. HOWEVER, the second half of the book really picks up and i found myself really enjoying the action scenes and characters once i'd cemented who was who in my brain (thank you dramatis personae). the writing is so fun with gideon being such a snarky narrator and i loved seeing her relationship with harrow and the other necromancers/cavaliers develop. that ending though...i'm looking forward to seeing how the story unfolds over the next books

btw, moira quirk does an incredible job narrating this. the voices she gives each character are so distinct and rich and she really kept me drawn in at the slower points of the story.
