I can't put my finger on why but I liked book one better. Possibly the investigation in book one as compared to the dippy storyline in book two? Still love the world and the characters...

Fun, light. Higher-3 stars range.

This is more of a 3.5 review. I love Jacqueline Carey. The way she is able to build believable worlds and characters, and shift between genres is FABULOUS. [I love The Sundering duology, the six book Kushiel's Legacy series, and the Santa Olivia duology. Full disclosure: I never read the Moirin trilogy.) While I thoroughly enjoyed Dark Currents, the first Agent of Hel novel, Autumn Bones left me feeling annoyed. Too much dwelling on unnecessary feelings of guilt. Some things are understandable for Daisy to feel a bit guilty about, mistakes are not fun to make. But she recognized them and took responsibility. Good. But the denouement was...lacking. It didn't feel unfinished, but Daisy's feelings at the end were very unproductive.

This series is like potato chips-- addictive and way more fun than it seems like it should be-- even with Norse mythology, fantasy creatures, and more in small-town America. Daisy, the conflicted, half-demon heroine, is fun, but the other characters really make the series. (It's also refreshing to read a book that is not solely reliant on the heroine's ability to fix things with newly developed magic abilities). Also, the lamia makes me incredibly happy. I need more powerful, half-snake women in my life. And also, ghouls.

I love Jacqueline Carey. I love her with the affection of someone who you see from a distance, who's always doing cool shit, saying wonderful things, and presenting themselves in a manner that always stops you and makes you say to yourself, "dang, Buddy. 10 out of 10."

and I'm also really happy she is investing herself and all of us with her in the stories and characters from Pemkowet. They are fallible, diverse, comedic, dangerous. The pace moves along well, the scenery is described well, though I wouldn't mind a little more (those of us from California miss a good description of the 4 seasons, since we have only 2 here).

My only two small comments are the sort of suspended delay of interaction romantically for Daisy, for me it drags slightly. Perhaps this is a device to be explored in later books, but it feels like the epic writing of the Kushiel series trained her to lengthen the story, inwhich here, we don't need so much suspense. Also, Daisy's constant inner monologue that describes her own life and the scene makes me a little impatient.
But these are small things.

Essentially, I'm in love, and will stay throughout wherever Pemkowet, and Daisy, go.

Compared to the first book, this one well..dragged. Things were happening constantly but it wasn't very exciting. And a lot of the action scenes had hardly any real action. The main character is also becoming a let down. She is a Hell-spawn and Hel's liaison, but she has no power or authority except threats and contacts. She never does much of anything. Even her few kills in the series happened while other people were holding them down, or they gave up. I wanted her to grow as a character, but she is more indecisive and weak in this book then she was in the last. She needs to learn how to make a decision and then how to back it. Why did Hel choose her? I just got bored.

Seasonal timing was perfect for this read. Yes, I sometimes found it a bit cheesy, but it was a tasty morsel of cheese. Light and fun, this is definitely an easy series. I'm still hoping for more eldritch sexy time. Maybe in the next book? Gah!

I liked the first one better than this one. I found it a bit knock-offy, and the heroine's voice reminiscent of Anita Blake, which isn't always the best thing.
