Though slower to start than its predecessors (and with a handful of unpleasant characters too), this might be the most thoughtful of the Fairyland books yet. Valente's characters expound on the natures of fiat currency and fossil fuels, and a revelation near the end reframes our understanding of the missing Fairies. A-Through-L is an especially vibrant character here, and September has become a more compelling character as she gets older and fears and longs to grow up, much more than the archetype she was in CIRCUMNAVIGATED FAIRYLAND. It's a book that should be read in the proper mood; September is often frustrated and trying to be more grown-up than she is and it seeps through the book, giving it the same itchy sense of adolescence that I experienced when reading HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX. But the worldbuilding may the best yet, as far from Fairyland as we are.

Be warned: this book ends on a cliffhanger.
