Fun graphic novel with great art and a delightful story. Perfectly leveled elementary readers and older (2nd grader and me!). When we get the next one there is going to be an intense rock-paper-scissors battle to see who gets to read it first.

Effie lost her mom and is dropped off to live with her strange, elderly aunts. Things get strange and Effie begins to realize there is more to her aunts careers than acupuncture and herbal treatments.

I added this to my TBR in 2022. Thanks to the magical shuffle of the TBR that Storygraph does, displaying different books each time you visit the home page, I rediscovered the book that was languishing on the ever-growing list.

And I INHALED this delightful, magical middle grade graphic novel. The art was vibrant, the story was fun, and the aunts were a hoot. Witches of Brooklyn has humor, sharp wit, friendship and family, magic, and a touch of adventure. I was engrossed in Effie’s journey, discoveries, and healing. As currently I am having difficulty finding reads that hold my attention, I loved that I didn’t look at my phone, the TV, or the clock. I just read—and then kicked myself for not getting the next three novels in the series when I picked up this first one!

Thank you, Effie. Maybe my reading slump is on its way out?

A girl comes to live with her aunt, discovers she is a witch, that they are witches, and so many adventures will start.

I bumped against this book and was instantly curious about it. It is almost Halloween so I just love a good book about witches. And this one sounded adorable and I definitely would like more Effie and her aunts.

In this one Effie becomes an orphan and starts living with her eccentric (but oh so fun) aunt and her friend. At first it is all bumpy but I just loved seeing how everyone started to get together more and more. How Effie and the aunts (I will just call them both that) got closer. I loved how they took care of Effie. And how when they find out she has powers they help her. Train her. Include her. They don’t mind that she is young, she is one of them. That was really fun.

Effie’s power (at least the one we saw) was fabulous… though I can only imagine that until she learns to control it, things won’t be easy. Until then best not to be in the neighbourhood of paintings or other art with dangerous animals or things.

I received an ARC of this title from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

When Effie's mother unexpectedly dies, it is even more unexpected that child protective services drops her off on the doorstep of the aunt that Effie had never met before. Make that two aunts...

Effie's two elderly aunts--one of whom is her mother's much older step-sister--are strange and fascinating, with their acupuncture business and insane amount of plants. But when Effie starts having weird dreams, she wonders if there's more to it than that. When their house is ambushed in the middle of the night by a popstar with a massive problem--and a huge performance in jeopardy--Effie learns that her aunts have been keeping secrets, and soon she will as well because... she's a witch!

Perfect for fans of "Phoebe and Her Unicorn", "The Okay Witch", and "Sabrina the Teenage Witch", "Witches of Brooklyn" is the delightful first graphic novel in this series focusing on Effie, her aunts, and their Witchy lives and how that impacts their relationships with each other, their non-Witch friends, and the world. An amazing story about adoption and family, full of humor, heart, and lots of unforgettable characters, "Witches of Brooklyn" will certainly enchant readers of all ages!

This was a nostalgic read for me as I hail from the same neighborhood mentioned in the story. As a child, I also lived with my aunts and this story brought back the memories that I had of them as mystical, other-worldly beings as they were so educated, well-traveled, and subscribed to spiritualism. The artwork was gorgeous, and the details in the grids were stunning. Each character had a distinctive voice, and the story pace was just right. I liked that this debut series gave just enough of a background of the main character, which allows readers to really enjoy her journey and learn more about her aunts while she is in training to be a witch. Highly recommended for children and adults alike. This graphic novel didn't feel like a middle-grade read and is a great introduction to graphic novels for curious people.
