I am re-reading cien años de soledad, twenty years after reading it, I thought it would be interesting to know what I think of it now, and since there is a TV show coming up soon I wanted to revisited this story that I loved very much when I read it in highschool

this book is fucking crazy and it took me 100 years to read it in solitude. i truly hated how each family generation kept using the same names because i’m easily confused. i flip-flopped between loving and hating this style of writing. the cyclical nature of this story and its overall themes are incredible though

3.5 stars. Meditative and reading more like a family history than a story, it is a very interesting book. It explores issues of family, nation, colonialism, tradition and even the notion of history itself. I cannot say I walk away from this book having loved it or even enjoyed it, but rather it is a book that leaves you in contemplation. It is more, to my mind, a book to be studied and explored, than to be enjoyed as a story. Not that there isn't enjoyment in that.
That said, if you do not have an interest in magical realism, and have difficulties keeping track of a multitude of characters, this may not be a book you'd enjoy. If you enjoy a more contemplative read, however, and are not frustrated by more than half of the characters sharing the same names, you may very much like to read it.

DID NOT FINISH

Unfortunately, I had to DNF this book. I just couldn't get into it and was about 4 hours into the audiobook when I stopped. I give books a little while to catch and hold my interest but this one couldn't. I found my mind wandering and thinking of reading something else. One thing I did discover was I can't handle slow paced books, anymore. I used to be able to power through them, but my tolerance has gone down since I was a teen. It actually made me a little sad but it is what it is. I hope other people enjoy it more than I did, it just wasn't for me.

I can finally mark this "classic" off my list, a classic that for some reason, is on every recommendation list for Hispanic and Latiné Heritage month.

For the record, while the writing was ahead of its time, the misogyny,
incest, pedophilia, rape
and overwhelming disregard for women as human beings
sure they live interesting lives, as long as they can deal with predatory men
are disgusting and littered throughout the entire book.

Not surprisingly this book won *prestigious* awards - hello Nobel winner - and is considered a must-read classic.

I hated every moment of this book, except for the narration, and couldn't wait for the horror to end.
