Moral of the story, it's spelled "Man"ipulation for a reason. Brie deserves an Anti-hero arc. I support women's rights, but more importantly I support women's wrongs.

Reread 09/11/2022 (audio):

Maybe I was much more clear headed this time or maybe coz I read it way slower, but I was so frustrated with Bri’s naïveté and okay, sheer stupidity this time around. I mean, you’re so untrustful of an entire species and then you go and not just make deals with them (which is fine, you had to), but then go and trust and blindly decide you’ll leave your entire life and protection responsibility on the shoulders of the lying, gaslighting pig who has done nothing but lie to you for years? I mean you’re all butt hurt about Finn hiding shit from you and then you go and go moony eyed over fucking Sebastien who’s so transparently deceitful all the time and let him control your entire existence? And then you’re shocked he betrayed you and did the one thing to you you never wanted, without your consent? Truly, it’s shocking 😒 And let me not even start on the GASLIGHTING DICK that is Sebastian. Ugh he makes me stabby. Having said that I’m still excited to read the next one and I hope she burns that whole kingdom down. Poor Finn, although I wish they hid fewer things from supposedly smart idiot Bri.

4.5 Emotional Tornado survivor stars

Why do I feel like I was just thrust into a raging tornado, knocked around like a doll, and mercilessly spit out in a sludgy ball of emotion? Okay, that was graphic but that’s exactly what the last 20% of this book did to me. And the world is just moving forward like it’s not all upside down right now? Rude.

Long story short, if you loved ACOTAR and love a twisty turny nauseatingly thrilling (in a good way) book that’ll make you throw your kindle by the time all’s said and done, you’re gonna love this book. Long story long, God where do I start. I went through a range of emotions as I was reading, especially towards Abriella, but I’d picked a team, like as soon as I met the players and I will sink with that ship (because I have a type and because I have great taste), and take the other one down with me if need be. Towards the end I was a stressed, anxious mess of a human followed by becoming a rage monster, at certain characters because very bad decisions were being made (and not in a good way). Even knowing the thought process and the circumstances that led to those decisions, I was mad and sad and yelling at my tablet like a mom who wanted the best for her children.

Who am I kidding, I thrive on the drama that comes with plucky human thief girls made of unplumbed depths and questionable choices, and Fae princes (two of them!) who could be anything from adorable swoon Gods to noble to just plain evil. And the high stakes that accompany it all. My crazy lady emotions aside, this book was an adrenaline junkie’s dream (me, but for books only), the pacing is exquisite and the hits keep coming, with no flagging whatsoever. And from now until the next book releases I’ll be looking into sacrifices I can make to dark Gods or bargains I can strike with shady Fae to get even a teeny tiny glimpse of what will happen next.

World building and immersion are amazingly well done. There’s lots of factions, characters, and lands. But despite this, I never felt confused or overloaded with information. But the Female Lead is so irritating. She’s not only naive, but denser than lead. She never asks the right questions, so much so that any foreshadowing becomes blatant and frustrating. It’s one thing to have an author guide the readers to future plot twists, and another to spoon feed them it with their nose pinched shut. I hope the supporting characters are treated better in the next book, and that the FL wises up.

Very much ACOTAR vibes but not necessarily in a bad way. The story was interesting and kept my attention, especially the second half of the book. I did think the first bit was a little on the slower side but once it picks up it’s hard to want to put it down. There are quite a few twists that I didn’t see coming, especially the ending, that had me zooming through this book and are the main reason I enjoyed it so much. I also unexpectedly didn’t mind the love triangle vibes as much as I thought I would.
