Some of the stories in this collection glowed more than others, but overall this was depressingly conservative, and in one story even reactionary. Maybe I would have liked them back in 2006. Tamora Pierce herself writes one of the better stories and attaches it to her Tortall stories, responding to a query she apparently gets from fans a lot. Margaret Mahy was another of the good ones.

If you feel like a low demand, low commitment read this is interesting enough, but I felt that some of the portrayal of cultures not the authors' while probably well intentioned were exoticising (including the one that I think was meant to be Aboriginal) and I had to remind myself that in 2005 some authors were trying their best with this sort of thing and possibly helped spark the conversations that have taken us further.

Not only having European based fantasy was good though.

There are definitely some stories I wanted to cut from this book this time around.

As with all short story collections there were a mix of wonderful stories and ones that I didn't enjoy as much. Overall I enjoyed it!

Pretty good! Obviously there are some winners and... not winners in any collection of short stories, but this one was more good than bad. There weren't any that were totally unreadable, and only a few that I didn't particularly like. I found several authors I'd never read before whom I definitely want to seek out at the library based on what they wrote for Young Warriors, which is great.

While the intended audience is more teen than youth, I was able to recommend a couple of the stories to my 10 year old when she forgot to bring a book of her own to a waiting room last week, and she enjoyed the one she read (The Boy Who Called 'Dragon').

Wow, how did I not know about this book?! Fantastic collection of YA fantasy short stories, featuring an astonishing array of "warriors", male and female, and with non-white protagonists abounding, something I'd not seen before in this field. Top job by top authors!

I liked some of these stories a lot, and didn't enjoy a lot of the other ones. Which, I guess, is how it goes with collections of short stories.
