An interesting, body horror based on the beauty industry, interwoven with takes of assimilation by the child of an immigrant. Ngl I mostly liked the music parts of this book, that was my favourite.
A few of my gripes were that both the main character, Lilith and Helen are all simultaneously too detached from the cult aspects of holistik, while also guzzling the koolaid. As far as horror goes there were aspects that were definitely unique, but eventually the descriptions of the next ghoulish beauty treatment started to feel a bit samey. I agree with everyone that said that the action packed finale was too rushed. I still think this is a good debut, which shows skill, but it just wasn't for me. Also (regarding the finale):MythBusters disproved the giant mirror death ray trope.
Wheelhouses: loving music descriptions, body horror.
Dog houses: so much sexual assault as horror, like so much, ending like every second scene with a fade to black and a sudden scene change upon waking up, detached character emotions.
