Did not capture me, I wanted escapism fantasy and this had too many parallels to reality as well as a lot more triggers than I was expecting

This was a lot better than I was expecting it to be! The characters were intelligent and well written and I liked the descriptions. There’s definitely some heavy content so check your TWs but I liked the main romance and I really enjoyed the protagonist. Her struggle was well written and her morality was complex and multilayered. I actually just really really liked this! I wasn’t super invested which is why it didn’t get 5 stars but it was really interesting and I intend to finish the series

If I could give this a -3.5 stars, I would. I did not like the main character at all. She annoyed me, and I didn't find the fact she was such a drunk to be at all appealing. The fact it was mentioned almost every page just got on my nerves!

Nothing against the author, I'm sure the book is great - I can see from a lot of reviews people loved the book, but it was not for me.

Trigger warning on this book of SH specifically carving.
This book started out a bit slow for me but once I was invested I enjoyed it. I'm not sure how I feel about the ending though. I enjoyed getting to know keera and her struggles and felt that made the book strong. I felt like the romance side plot with
Riven
was a bit forced.

I really wanted to like this one but god it was a slog to get through. In the first 10 chapters I swear the author was just trying to put the word "wine" on the page as many times as she could.

I still don't understand what the difference between an elf and a fae is.

A lot of the prose was repetitive, the MC mentions her scars so many times I DID NOT CARE about the big reveal with them at the end.

I did like that Keera was flawed, but it really felt like every one that got brought up suddenly had a magical fix, especially
her alcoholism. You're gonna spend 3 chapters telling me how much of a drunk she is and then drop a magic elixir that basically cures her?

This book explored a lot of topics i was really interested in reading about like colonialism and trying to hold on to pieces of your heritage but at the end of it I just found myself not interested in the world or the characters. I'm sure other people liked this one but it wasn't for me.

A really solid fantasy novel with just a tad of romance. If you like a predominantly plot based fantasy book with a lighter focus on romance (enemies to lovers), you’ll enjoy this. Honestly I’m not sure the romance was absolutely necessary for the plot but it wasn’t that out of place for the genre. Keera is a really great female protagonist who is fierce and fighting the good fight; a bit cliche at times but overall very well motivated and detailed character. I can’t wait to see her journey through the rest of the saga. The side characters are absolutely amazing too- I ‘love to hate’ Damien and the king, and I love sweet ones like Gwyn too. Overall a great book and looking forward to the next one, but it’s nothing extremely memorable for me personally (that sounds mean but just imo). (Also this book reminds me of the hunger games vaguely with its theme of converting the heroine to overthrowing the government)
