Solid 3.5 rounded up to a 4. I really did enjoy it and would recommend. I truly enjoyed the characters and the magical families that each had their own power. It was really cool.

This was kind of great! The moulin rouge influence was strong, which i loved because i love that story but the changes kept it unique and different in a way that didnt make me bored and left me guessing till the end. The magic in this was amazingly well done! I feel like i need more stories set in this world!
Other things i liked:
The villain was chefs kiss.
The strong ties to family and found family.
Roger!
I found Luxe’s conflicts really compelling.
Overall it was fun, magical, intriguing and atmospheric. Highly recommend if you’re a fan of moulin rouge, or Caraval or even the Night Circus.

At the beginning I thought the mistaken identity part was going to go on for too long and I stopped reading, but when I pushed past that, it thankfully resolved quickly and I was enjoying the middle. The last third got a bit melodramatic, with everyone sacrificing themselves for everyone else and just repeating the same things over and over. I liked that I didn't quite know how they were going to resolve everything. The overall idea was interesting, and while I had some quibbles with some execution, I enjoyed my time reading it.

I forgot it was Moulin Rouge inspired until I reread the synopsis at the end, but I can definitely see that influence. I think this could be a fantastic TV miniseries because I'd love to see the 1920s influence on the island, the Revelles' costumes and the acrobat shows and how all the magic looks.
