I couldn’t say it:m better than the quote on the cover: “This book will break your heart and then piece it back together again.” It’s been a while since I had a good cry while reading.
However, between the heart wrenching stories of Nani and Rakhsana’s mom, the cruelty Rakhsana’s endures, Sohail’s murder, the trials of a queer Muslim Bengali-American teen, and the beautiful and hopeful ending, I was doomed to cry.

Anxious book that deals brilliantly with queerphobia, despair and hope. Complex characters, very well written espacially Rukhsana who is really strong and inspiring.

Rukhsana Will do just about anything to keep her parents from finding out she’s a lesbian because she knows they will lose it, which creates tension with her girlfriend who just doesn’t understand why she can’t come out to them. A stressful but excellent read. Wasn’t a fan of the privileged/unsupportive girlfriend, and Rhukhsana’s parents suck, but still enjoyable.

This book was disappointing. It felt like a book about queer people written by a straight author. It needed explicit trigger warnings.
