This was quite the book. I don't really know how to explain my feelings. I think it was interesting. I liked the magic system. The worldbuilding and the lore were interest. I struggled to like the main characters -- Calla, Anton, and August -- and I'm wasn't the best fan of the romance between Calla and Anton.

I will be devouring book 2 the day it comes out.

Also I need to know what happens to Mao Mao. .25 dock for leaving that unanswered.

If Squid Games was televised like the Hunger Games, set in a somewhat Neo-HongKong/ Ba Sing Se-esque city state with it's citizens having a special Sci-fi power thrown in; this was a wild story start to finish.

Immortal Longings reminded me why I loved Chloe Gong's writing. Her descriptive world building is perfect for those that like to really dig into the pseudohistorical/background information of the plot elements, and for those like that me that imagine what it would look like as a show or movie. It's an omnipresent POV, following the important characters like we're watching a play unravel, just as it's inspired source does.

Quite obsessed with the love between the leads Calla and Anton- they're a perfectly dangerous and hot pair that actually are on an even playing field, which only makes me more devastated that I'll have to wait an entire year for the sequel. Calling all serious angst lovers, the ending truly destroyed me.

Anyways, if you like badass couples that are at each others throats, but would also kill for each other, then you'll love this book!

Be warned, there's tons of injury detail/body horror/almost gory descriptions, so read with caution!

This book was a little bit slow to start out, but oh my god that ending! This is one of those stories that picks up steam as it goes and just gets better and better. The plot twist is everything. I guessed some of the smaller points, but I had no idea how the story was gonna end.
Calla is my absolute favorite character in the story. She is strong vicious and does what she needs to do.
Highly recommend this book, if you want some thing dark with a bit of steam and tons of political intrigue.

It was a wonderful book. It has the essence of the story of Antony and Cleopatra but put into a completely new and different world that changes their personalities and helps them develop as characters beyond the mythology that has been created around them.
The world and the plot are complex but the author introduces them in a way that you don't get lost. As well as having some plot-twist and mystery that blew me away.
You can tell that Chloe Gong has matured as an author and I loved the story.
