This is a Persephone retelling(probably Hades as well, but it's not as obvious) that felt a bit like a mash up of Practical Magic(movie), Charmed(original version) and a dash of The Craft(movie) for about the first half before it went along it's own way.
Persephone has always been alone, foster home to foster home to group home till she ages out, now she moves about every 6 months, give or take a few, whenever she causes something weird to happen.
This last episode was a doozy though, 2 people tried to kill themselves and then she knocked out an entire coffee shop full of people. When she runs this time she runs to the only friend she's ever managed to make in her 30ish yrs. She finds out she's a witch and all sorts of shenanigans ensue.
The editing was a bit weak for me(could use another round, and likely has had as this is an ARC copy) but the story itself was interesting, it takes place across 3 different worlds, and it was nice to see a Hades/Persephone retelling that wasn't 100% predictable, probably because the Hades character wasn't really a focus, this was all about the women and finding love and family.
I received this ARC through NetGalley and St. Martin's Press

I enjoyed the characters and the storyline, but it was kind of a mess for me. It jumped around with all kinds of magic stuff that made it hard to follow.

I was between 3 and 4 stars for this one. For some reason, it just didn't pull me in nor hold my interest but I did like the concept.

it wasn't something I could get into, but well written
Persephone has been alone; thinking she was abandoned. And realizing that she has powers that she has no control over-that have caused many accidents.
Her friend invites her to Wile Isle where she discovers many things about herself, her power, and her family.

This one just wasn't for me. Too much telling rather than letting me discover. I struggled through the first 3 chapters and then, from there, just never connected. I found the magic intriguing but I just genuinely stopped caring enough to even try to understand it. I wish I'd loved this more.
A huge thank you to the author and St. Martin's Griffin for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.

*this arc was sent to me by the publisher to give an honest review in return*
I liked this book which is about a girl named Persephone who is lonely as she was abandoned when she was young but she accidentally exposes magic one day which leads her to Wile Isle which involves a curse and family feud that she must solve. I’m a sucker for books with witches in them. For this book, I enjoyed the overall story plot and could see what it was getting at. The beginning was easy to get into but the pacing got a little slow and didn’t pick up pace which made it a little difficult for me to stay focused. The world building was okay in a way I understand the world in ways how magic world and the family relations but at some parts it would get complicated. The beginning and middle of the story was great as the story was fun but the ending got complicated and I was lost half of the time.
I have to say that the characters saved the book for me. I enjoyed Persephone’s character as she has to go through a lot and had a great character development. I also enjoyed the side characters especially Persephone’s sisters and the great sisterhood bond. There are also villains in this book that are witches which is really amazing. There is sadly no romance in the book but I loved how the theme of family played in this book instead.
The ending was kind of rough in my opinion and could have been better. The writing style just wasn’t for me but the characters were great. I think those who love complicated magic systems would enjoy this book more so I recommend it to them. But if you think you will like it I recommend it to fans of witches and Medusa stories.
