This held some return to the signature humor of the series that I felt was lacking in book 3 (I accidentally skipped #4, so I'm not sure about that one), which helped keep it from getting bogged down in the really heavy histories of the main characters. Note content warning.
I normally like Justine Eyre's narration, but she couldn't decide if Aurelie had an Irish, French, or English accent. At first I thought she was going with Irish when Aurelie was pretending to be the widow of an Irishman, but then I noticed it seemed to be a random mix of French and Irish, before it faded out to more English. So not her best work.

Moderate: Rape
The possibly triggering content is only vaguely described, but does come up a lot, and is vaguely described several times. It's a driving force behind the plot.amlibera's review against another edition

Probably more like 3.5 stars but rounding up for this one because there's a kind of comfort in the Palace of Rogues series that hit me at the right time. This outing feels just a bit like fan fiction of Joanna Bourne's Spymaster series and for all the complexity of the back story here, the actual plot is a little slight (almost like the second half of a much longer book - so much happens in the past for these characters).

Things I liked:
- Aurelie’s innocent determination to make a better life for herself than the one decided for her was so brave. I loved that she was equal parts soft and brave.
- Hawkes was also a really interesting character. The moment when he finally meets Aurelie after searching for her is amazing.
- I absolutely loved the cast of characters at the Grand Palace. They are so kind and witty. They made the story really interesting too.
Things I didn’t like:
- Can’t think of anything.
Graphic: Sexual content, Rape, Injury/Injury detail, and Blood

This has been such a wonderful series! Julie Anne Long continues to entertain and delight with this wonderfully written book!! I thought the plot was intriguing and a fun twist on the typical romance. I loved the characters and thought they were well developed.
