This is my introduction to Pablo Neruda, and it's not the type of poetry I would normally reach for - my favourite dead poet is Al Purdy, so clearly I'm a little more blue collar. I appreciate that the poems in this collection felt very cohesive together, with recurring images of this woman as the earth that he grounds himself in, and the island and ocean that they live on/near. I like how he combines the physicality and emotionality of their relationship, like one can't exist without the other.
I will also note that this edition is lovely, wondeful cover design with rose-gold foil, and bilingual side-by-side translation of the poems. I don't speak Spanish beyond first year university level, but I appreciate that for those who do, you can compare and see where the translation had to make shifts (e.g., in the first lines of the collection, "Pequeña rosa, rosa pequeña" becomes "little rose, roselet", which doesn't scan as well, but a direct word-for-word translation would sound odd).
Also, I think this man might have a foot fetish.

I don't think poetry is for me.
Knowing Spanish would have been better because I genuinely believe some feelings were lost in translation. Half the time, I couldn't feel anything. Some of the lines were pretty, and there was some beautiful imagery, but other than that, it wasn't hitting.

"My love,
We have found each other
Thirsty and we have
Drunk up all the water and the
Blood,
We found each other
Hungry
And we bit each other
As fire bites,
Leaving wounds in us."

Este es el primer libro de Pablo Neruda q he leído, y pensé q me gustaría mas solo me gustaron 3 poemas, la forma en la q escribe no es mi favorita, seguiré dándole oportunidad a otro de sus libros
These are beautiful, earthy, tangible poems. I connected deeply to nearly all of them and it was fun trying out my Spanish reading and comprehension which are now below hell
