I picked this book up based on https://www.elle.com/culture/books/a45127506/no-plot-just-vibes-books/ , as I liked a lot of books mentioned there, but this one was not for me.
the worst thing a person or character can be isn't unlikable. it's boring,
these characters are definitely not boring.
what they are is very pretentious and self-serious and generally Too Damn Much but i did always find them interesting. and that's enough for me!
maybe coincidentally and maybe not, same goes for the writing style. overwrought for sure but i will take that over blah any day of the goddamn week.
fun!
bottom line: too much over not enough!
3.5

I really enjoyed reading Happy Hour but can see why it’s not for everyone. It is plotless fiction (which I’m a fan of) and I found it really entertaining and funny at times. I laughed aloud several times throughout the book. I enjoyed the writing and Isa’s observations and it also reminded me of a time in my early 20s when I was kind of meandering in another country without a real plan (not that this means Isa and Gala represent all people in their early 20s but I did connect with it based on my own experiences).
“We shared a taxi downtown. It was my favourite time of evening, when the sun starts to set and the lights come on in the streets and it's all blue and yellow. It's the time when people come home and turn on a lamp, and no one thinks to draw their curtains just yet. Civil dusk, it's called. It's the only hour in any city where everything suddenly turns familiar.”

not everyone will get it but this is kinda exactly what its like being 21 with a bestfriend who has bpd
Good for what it is, if a bit slow at times. Granados does a good job of chronicling the good and bad of the adventures of two friends and a summer in New York City, and showing how all at once, a city adventure can be glamorous and yet tedious and mundane.
While moments in the book can evoke the feeling of what this might be, I can imagine it being more impactful if you have visited the Big Apple itself.
The many characters Isa and Gala meet really drive home the adage 'its a nice place to visit but I'm not sure I'd want to live there'.
I thought that it was a good descriptive work but the overall plot left something to be desired.

No plot, just vibes, and the vibes are two broke girls living aimlessly in NY. It's not a bad book, the writing is actually outstanding. But I was so annoyed by the characters. They are pretentious and do nothing except generate drama.
Everyone in this book was sooooo annoying and it was just New York propaganda like okayyy we get it you are in NYC and it is the MOST exciting and very BEST place to be.
so refreshing! The Neapolitan Novels, but make it Gossip Girl.
