“Don't overthink everything. You might be surprised by how much you'd like being out of control. Being alive is chaos, and living in it is half the fun.”

This was a really solid 4 ⭐️ read for me. I had a little bit of a difficult time getting started with this book, because I had just come out of a reading slump. However, after a handful of chapters I already started noticing that I was eager to find out what would happen next and before I knew it I was really invested.

This book was a first from Katherine Quinn for me and I can say right now - it will not be my last!! Right from the first page we are introduced to beautiful world building and complex characters, and the addition of legends and what they meant to the characters added so much complexity both to the characters and the world they live in. As a history buff, I felt a little bit of extra appreciation for them as well as its to something you typically see to this extent in books.

The characters themselves were so well fleshed out, with our broody MC and fiery FMC. I loved watching both their character growth, their relationship develop and how it grew them as individuals, and the angst... *chefs kiss*. The plot itself was engaging all the way through, and the last 10% of the book had me feeling every single emotion and then some. I enjoyed the complexity of the plot and how it wasn't predictable - every single guess I had for how things were going to turn out, was not how they turned out at all.

Absolutely LOVED this book, all the stars! Can't wait to read more by this author, her writing style is spot on for me!

Okay. Wow. There were several things I loved about this book. The dual POV, the writing style, the way information got revealed, the written correspondence snippets at the beginning of each chapter, I could go on. This just had the perfect amount of everything for me. Romance, humor, tragedy, suspense, friendship, mystery, magic, mythology; again I could go on. I loved that the main characters were scarred and imperfect. I loved the bond of found family & friendship throughout the book. OH the MMC is named JUDE and ohmygosh, LOVED that as well.

The first 50 or so pages really read like the author saw Divergent and went "I'll have what she's having" in some super obvious ways.

But then it becomes strongly its own thing, and I enjoyed it a lot. The atmosphere is spooky in a great way, the characters are strong, and the journey is engaging.

There is a bit of insta-love, and the plot is definitely predictable overall, but I enjoyed myself, and I would definitely be interested in the sequel when it comes out, so I call that a win overall.

This was really fun, but it does have some issues with the writing. Pacing is pretty wishy washy and sometimes it can be a bit cheesy, I also wish some of the side characters were explored more. Besides that, this book has a HUGE atmosphere, like a Dark Souls game almost this book was an amazing atmospheric experience, and the story while a bit awkward due to the above problems, the plot twists and plot in general was enganging and I had a crap ton of fun. I will definitely be tuning into the second book when it comes, and I don't understand the pretty negative stigma behind this book. If the writer sorts out the kinks, this will be an amazing duology.
