I kind of enjoyed the first half of this book and found the world interesting. I found the second half very dull and monotonous. And I don't think I truly understood the point of the second half. It was very dry and bland. I will look into the point of it for sure but I was really forcing myself through the end jesus.

I re-read this ahead of reading Julia by Sandra Newman, but now I’m wondering if it really was a re-read. Anyway this was a mixed bag for me. There are parts that really drag (

sections from the book, O’Brien’s torture monologues, the newspeak explainers

) and Winston’s misogynistic attitude was off-putting. (Frankly the portrayal of women in general in this book is horrible. Sexy baby or worn out drudge; and an idiot either way.) But I did enjoy the plottier bits and the world-building was pretty interesting. Hoping Julia can redeem this a bit.
