I was blown away by the way Kirsty Logan writes and tapped into those every day fears we have as women, mothers, humans, but so rarely voice. Beautifully written, compelling, dark, and satisfying. I highly recommend this collection to anyone looking for a dark but beautiful experience.

Genuinely uncomfortable and a little scary reads.

We read this for our book group - chosen by me, and one thing I learnt was that short stories are hard to discuss in a book group - everyone remembers different ones especially when there are so many as in this collection. I'm left with a feeling of being unsettled, rather than scared, and that's fine. They built up as a whole, scratching away at me and leaving me with images: a lit torch left in a field, shark pods that produce babied, strands of hair around a door knob.

I loved this book. It feels fresh and new and exciting. I loved the different forms the different stories took, like a survey, or with footnotes that are the main part. The writing was so visceral and really made me react physically, which is a sign of vivid and immersive storytelling. I loved the almost narrator’s voice developing throughout. The only reason it’s not 5 stars is because it took me ages to read, even though it is so short, so it wasn’t as if I couldn’t put it down.
