Never seen the films, knew literally nothing going in.

Brilliant book, really takes a turn at the 33% mark, every section was very distinct, interesting and horrifying.

All the significant characters are absolutely monstrous blokes, with maybe 3 exceptions; less by the end. 

Highlights for me were: end of book 1,  3-5 and 8
