OMG!! WTF!

It’s was intense! Didn’t need to be so long and is quite repetitive, especially with the Alec stuff, but that’s just how he wears her down. Bloody almost wore me down! Legit just finished it on my commute home and I just took my shoes but still got my bag in hand, typing this in the entryway.. WTF!

The writing is very lyrical and poetic! I’m a sucker for the sublime imagery of nature. I’ve definitely romanticised pastoral and agricultural living — I will always be a city gorl at heart — but Hardy really did it justice. It’s enrapturing to read the natural beauty juxtaposed against the absolute tragedy of Tess!

This should be called The Tragedy of Tess (of the D’Urbervilles!)

It’s kind of obscene the length Hardy pushes his heroine to but at the same time, men will MAKE you do wild and stupid things.

The last thirty pages had me gobsmacked! It was a bit rushed which was unnecessary considering how much meandering and filler there was. The ending was far too short. I need more! I’m filled with more questions than answers!!

My main takeaway: don’t trust men.. ever!!

P.s.

Angel is the type of man who would say he’s not like other men then be just like other men.. or worse! He’s a nice boy that doesn’t know why he’s single then go to reject every woman as they don’t fit his ideal! I could see him as an incel or type of bloke who wants traditional roles, a wife barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen, then not be able to sustain a traditional lifestyle. What a wet blanket!! Beta-make type shit!

I read this book in high school as part of a required reading assignment. I typically HATE being told what to read, and I never would have chosen this book on my own, but I ended up shocked by how much I enjoyed reading about Tess’s life and am so glad I read it! I read the whole thing rather than skimming and skipping pages.

This book is not only a testament to Hardy’s mastery of the English language but also to the depravity of the AQA English literature course.  I hated every minute of this book, unfortunately it is well crafted.
